Il film si apre seguendo due ufficiali dell'Aviazione degli Stati Uniti d'America che raggiungono la sala di
controllo di un silos di missili balistici intercontinentali "nascosta" sotto quella che appare come una comune
villetta, per il 

loro turno di servizio. Dopo un breve battibecco coi colleghi per via del loro ritardo i
due si trovano di fronte a una situazione cruciale, ricevendo notizia di un attacco improvviso da parte dei Sovietici e
l'ordine immediato di 

rispondere con tutti i missili. Terminata la verifica del codice di conferma ricevuto
ciascuno dei due deve girare la propria "chiave di lancio" ma il più anziano dei due (reduce del Vietnam come si
evinceva dai dialoghi iniziali) non 

riesce a compiere il gesto che lo renderebbe direttamente responsabile
della morte di milioni di cittadini russi ed est-europei. La "crisi" era solo un'esercitazione a sorpresa, durante la
quale però, gli scrupoli morali di molti degli 

addetti al lancio ha determinato, nel campione esaminato,
un tasso di lanci falliti del 22%. Questo dà agli esperti di computer che lavorano presso il quartier generale NORAD
di Monte Cheyenne abbastanza influenza politica da convincere 

l'amministrazione Reagan a "escludere gli
uomini dai circuiti", automatizzando l'intera catena di comandi in modo che un ordine di lancio approvato dal presidente
e convogliato tramite il quartier generale si traduca senza fallo in un 

effettivo e massiccio attacco
atomico..............


Storyline:


A young computer whizz kid accidentally connects into
a top secret super-computer which has complete control over the U.S. nuclear arsenal. It challenges him to a game
between America and Russia, and he innocently starts the countdown to 

World War 3. Can he convince the
computer he wanted to play a game and not the real thing ?
